![]() Amy Davidson - Thursday thru Sunday, June 26 thru 29, 2008Instructor: Amy Davidsonwww.humblebeequiltworks.com Class: "Hip to Bee Square" Vendor: Sue's Quilt Shop, Belleville, Patches and Lace Quilt Shop, Alpena Hip to Bee Square is a very easy fat quarter quilt. It goes together quickly and gives a 3-D illusion. It looks like the blocks float on the background fabrics. Spend some time with Amy and learn how to combat bad piecing, strong arm pressing and other problems that plague quilters. We will make a beautiful quilt, but even better, we will explore all of Amy's "get outta jail free" tricks to fix it when it's not playing fair. Learn what a "Screaming Intersection" is and why having a big bottom isn't all bad About Amy...About Amy:My name is Amy Davidson and I'm just like all the other quilters out there. I love to quilt and I love fabric. Maybe the only difference between you and me is I can't leave well enough alone. Most quilters are content with quilting. I felt the urge to turn my passion into a job. Maybe out of selfishness, I wanted to quilt and not go to a job that didn't involve quilting.I come from a "stitching" background. My mother owned a needlepoint shop for 15 years while I was growing up. While I always swore I would NEVER be anything like my mother, our lives have ended following a similar path. I must admit that I am very much like my Mom and proud of it. Thanks, Mom. Back in 1995 or so, I got my nerve up to apply at a quilt shop. I really had only done a little quilting at that point, but ignorance has never stopped me before. I got the job and I was off on this great adventure. I learned as much as I could, mostly by picking the brains of quilt teachers and other more knowledgeable quilters. I was soon teaching classes. Some nights I was learning the technique from books before teaching them in the morning! I found the joy I got from watching students "catch the bug" was even more fun than quilting itself. I was definitely hooked on teaching. While teaching , I found myself searching out or developing the best, most reliable techniques I could. This often caused me to rewrite directions to incorporate these techniques. In 2003 I got involved in designing some quilts for a fabric company. They needed quilts made with their fabric for Quilt Market. Does it get any better than that? The company was South Sea Imports. I have also worked for P & B Textiles doing the same thing. I travel and teach to many guilds and shops. My first love is still seeing that spark in a student's eye. In 2004, the day before I turned 40, I started Humble Bee Quilt Works. It was the logical next step for me. If I was going to rewrite pattern directions for classes and design quilts for fabric companies, why wouldn't I do it under my own label? I have had patterns in Quilt magazine and Quilter's World magazine. I have also had a quilt in Keepsake Catalog. Humble Bee now has more than 16 patterns. I love what I do. It has been a blast. Thank you to my husband Charlie and my two great kids for their support. www.humblebeequiltworks.com

Spider Hexagon
About Gyleen...Spider Hexagon:An antique quilt re-drafted for the "modern woman". Explore the versatility of pyramids to make hexagons; for drama add color and texture; oh, and a pieced border, too! Don't get caught in the web; relax and enjoy! Day one: piecing the hexagons; Day two: piecing the border About
Gyleen I've been quilting since 1981 and began needlework at the very young age of 4. My Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering from Drexel University combined with my love of art provided the foundation for creating instructional lectures, workshops and patterns that encompass: design, quilt making and expression of colour. My quilts blend colour, pattern and texture to provide a contemporary essence to traditional quilting. I've gained support and enthusiasm exhibiting both locally and nationally and was ecstatic at being a "Best of Show" and a repeat blue ribbon winner. My writing life came much later; I started with technical reports, moved to technical instructions and finally got the courage to do creative organized thinking. My written works center around Haiku poems, quilt patterns and magazine articles and of course the crème de la crème, books. I have authored and published two books, The Dream and Poetry and Patchwork. You can see my published work in Quilt Magazine, Patchwork Quilting and Quilter's Almanac magazines. I opened Colourful Stitches in 1999 and formed its first subsidiary,
FPI Publishing in 2005.

Sometimes it can be for a loved one in need, birth of a child, a thank you or simply a tribute to a natural beauty that I have experienced, such as a lovely sunset. The first person that inspired me in quilting was my husband's grandmother - Anna Sitar. Her love and patience that was invested into quilts will forever remain imprinted in my mind.
